What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the swelling and accumulation of fluid in a body part caused by disruption of the lymphatic system.
What causes it?
- Cancer treatments – including radiation therapy and surgeries
- Chronic venous problems
- Heaviness or feeling of fullness
- Stiffness and reduced flexibility
- Tight clothing/jewellery
How is it treated?
The best and most effective treatment for lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes:
- Manual Lymph Drainage
- Compression bandaging and garment fitting
- Skin care
While there is no cure, lymphedema can be very well managed and early diagnosis and treatment are important.
