What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is the swelling and accumulation of fluid in a body part caused by disruption of the lymphatic system.

What causes it?

  • Surgery
  • Trauma
  • Cancer treatments – including radiation therapy and surgeries
  • Chronic venous problems
  • Heredity

Symptoms include:

  • Heaviness or feeling of fullness
  • Aching
  • Burning
  • Stiffness and reduced flexibility
  • Tight clothing/jewellery

How is it treated?

The best and most effective treatment for lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage
  • Compression bandaging and garment fitting
  • Exercise
  • Skin care

While there is no cure, lymphedema can be very well managed and early diagnosis and treatment are important.

  • ...Client testimonial... I was devastated when I first got lymphedema after breast surgery. The swelling from my arm was so severe, I thought I wouldn't ever be able to wear proper clothes again. I was very worried. But after the first Manual Lymph Drainage treatment I immediately felt better and after only a few treatments, my swelling has gone down and Sam' reassurance and positivity have been life-changing for me.
